Do I need a permit to hike The Skyline Trail?A backcountry permit is not required to hike the Skyline Trail if you are staying at the Lodge. However, backcountry permits are required if you are staying in a campsite along the Skyline Trail.

Was Shovel Pass Lodge and/or The Skyline Trail affected by the 2024 wildfires in Jasper?Shovel Pass Lodge was unaffected by the 2024 wildfires. From the lodge you can see the burn scar but the lodge and its surroundings were unaffected. The Skyline Trail was affected by the 2024 wildfires with some sections being severely burnt. However, it is open and safe to hike on for 2025.

When does the Lodge open for the season?In 2025, Shovel Pass Lodge will be open from July 7 - September 15.

How difficult is it to get to Shovel Pass Lodge?The Skyline Trail is commonly rated as a moderate hike. It is well-marked with a defined trail and adequate signage. The first section is a steady incline, which leads to the ridgeline, where you will encounter subtle inclines and declines along your way. Staying at the lodge means you won’t have to carry a heavy backpack with camping gear, which makes the Skyline Trail accessible for people of various fitness levels.

Is there a minimum number of nights required to stay at the Lodge?There is no minimum stay requirement at Shovel Pass Lodge. However, guests staying more than one night will receive a discounted rate.

What is the food like at Shovel Pass Lodge?At Shovel Pass Lodge, our food highlights Canadian cuisine, served in a cozy, rustic setting. Ingredients are brought in on horseback, so every item is carefully selected for both its durability and flavour. During your stay, you’ll enjoy hearty, home-cooked meals featuring local ingredients. Dinner at the lodge is a three-course experience, complete with an appetizer, salad, a main meat course, side pairings, and dessert. Breakfast features an egg dish, breakfast meats, fruit, and a pastry to start your day. For lunch, we provide a bagged lunch with a sandwich made on freshly baked bread, fruits, and other snacks to keep you fuelled for your day of hiking.

Can food allergies be accommodated at Shovel Pass Lodge?When completing your booking request, there is a section to disclose any food allergies. While Shovel Pass Lodge makes every effort to prevent allergens in your meals, we cannot guarantee a completely allergen-free environment, as all meals are prepared in the same kitchen for all guests.

What is provided at the Lodge?Shovel Pass Lodge provides our guests with the following items and amenities: An afternoon snack upon your arrival to the lodge Dinner, breakfast and a bagged lunch to take on the trail when you depart Potable water A private cabin for you and your group Bedding (including pillows, comforters and sheets) Locally made hand/body soap Hot water for washing up A personal wash cloth Heating in your cabin and in the main lodge Outhouse bathroom facilities

What should I bring?As a hiker and guest at Shovel Pass Lodge, we suggest you bring the following items: Water bottles Clothing for variable weather conditions Personal first aid supplies and toiletries Sunscreen Camera Flashlight/headlamp If you arrive at the lodge and realize you’ve forgotten something, please don’t hesitate to ask us.

Do you serve alcohol?Shovel Pass Lodge does not serve alcohol, but you are welcome to bring and consume your own personal alcoholic beverages.

Are the cabins shared or private?The cabins at Shovel Pass Lodge are private, only you and people from your group will be in a cabin together. We do not have any shared accommodations at the lodge. If you're travelling solo and would like to stay at the lodge, you are welcome to book an entire cabin, though please note there is an $80 single occupancy fee.

What time do I have to be there?Check-in for your stay at Shovel Pass Lodge is between 2pm and 5:30pm. When you arrive, please come to the main lodge to receive your cabin assignment. Check-out is at 10:00am the following morning.

Is there a shower?No. There is no shower or running water at Shovel Pass Lodge. There is drinking water available at the main lodge and a hot water thermos in your cabin for washing up.

Do I need to carry bear spray?It is always recommended to carry bear spray in the backcountry. Bear spray can be rented from https://jaspersports.com/rentals/ in Jasper.

Is there cell service or wifi at the Lodge?No. There is no cellular service, wifi or electricity at the Lodge. In case of emergency, the main lodge and staff cabin are equipped with satellite phones to contact emergency services.

Am I required to tip?Tipping at Shovel Pass Lodge is not required, but it is always appreciated if you feel the service warrants it. Please note that cash is the only method of payment we can accept at the lodge.
