In 2026, Shovel Pass Lodge will be open from July 1 - September 15.
The Skyline Trail is commonly rated as a moderate hike. It is well-marked with a defined trail and adequate signage. The first section is a steady incline, which leads to the ridgeline, where you will encounter subtle inclines and declines along your way. Staying at the lodge means you won’t have to carry a heavy backpack with camping gear, which makes the Skyline Trail accessible for people of various fitness levels.
There is no minimum stay requirement at Shovel Pass Lodge. However, guests staying more than one night will receive a discounted rate.
A backcountry permit is not required to hike the Skyline Trail if you are staying at the Lodge. However, backcountry permits are required if you are staying in a campsite along the Skyline Trail.
Shovel Pass Lodge was unaffected by the 2024 wildfires. From the lodge you can see the burn scar but the lodge and its surroundings were unaffected.
The Skyline Trail was affected by the 2024 wildfires with some sections being severely burnt. However, it is open and safe to hike on for 2025.
At Shovel Pass Lodge, you’ll enjoy hearty, home-cooked meals featuring local ingredients.
Dinner at the lodge includes an appetizer, a main course, side pairings, and dessert. Breakfast will feature an egg dish, breakfast meats, and a pastry to start your day. For lunch, we provide a bagged lunch with a sandwich made on freshly baked bread and other snacks to keep you fuelled for your day of hiking.
When completing your booking, there is a section to disclose any food allergies. While Shovel Pass Lodge makes every effort to prevent allergens in your meals, we cannot guarantee a completely allergen-free environment, as all meals are prepared in the same kitchen for all guests.
Shovel Pass Lodge provides our guests with the following items and amenities:

As a hiker and guest at Shovel Pass Lodge, we suggest you bring the following items:

Yes. Please keep in mind that we only accept cash at Shovel Pass Lodge. Alcohol pricing can be found on our Rates page. You are also welcome to bring and consume your own personal alcoholic beverages.
The cabins at Shovel Pass Lodge are private, only you and people from your group will be in a cabin together. We do not have any shared accommodations at the lodge.
If you're travelling solo and would like to stay at the lodge, you are welcome to book an entire cabin, though please note there is an $80 single occupancy fee.
Check-in for your stay at Shovel Pass Lodge is anytime after 3pm. We recommend aiming to be here by 5:30pm so that you have time to settle in before dinner at 7pm.
Check-out is at 10:00am the following morning.
There is no shower or running water at Shovel Pass Lodge. There is drinking water available at the main lodge and a hot water thermos in your cabin for washing up.
It is always recommended to carry bear spray in the backcountry.
Bear spray can be rented from https://jaspersports.com/rentals/ in Jasper.
There is no cellular service, wifi or electricity at the Lodge. In case of emergency, the main lodge and staff cabin are equipped with satellite phones to contact emergency services.
Tipping at Shovel Pass Lodge is not required, but it is always appreciated if you feel the service warrants it.
Please note that cash is the only method of payment we can accept at the lodge.
